There is no such thing as a perfect Quality Management System. However, management has a responsibility to ensure that the system is suitable and as good as possible and will help to attain the standard of quality required by the customer.

Many managers, not in day-to-day contact with the workplace, need to keep in touch by regular formalised review of:

• The current practice against the official procedures

• The effectiveness and currency of the procedures themselves.

This formalised review is usually referred to as an audit.

The process is similar to the financial auditing carried out to determine the company’s financial viability.

It is worth pointing out that there is a basic difference between auditing and assessment.

Auditing is carried out against a well-established written procedure with a pre-established checklist.

Assessment is carried out to judge a quality system against a basis of guidelines as represented by an International Standard such as ISO 9001.

The audit system we propose consists of a full auditing course with Powerpoint slides, together with a database record system designed to run on Windows computers. This was developed with the benefit of over 20 years experience of auditing and assessment.
